National Service (Part 2) : Conscription Or The Right To Choose?

What is the rationale for conscription? Why should the sovereignty of the nation rest on the backs of conscripted men? Should Singaporean males have a say in how they wish to serve their country instead of being forced to undergo two years of military service?
Bryan, a student at Singapore Polytechnic who has yet to do his national service, believes that draft should be abolished and be replaced with voluntary service. He also feels that the army should operate on free market principles.
Tan Ern Ser, a sociologist at NUS, disagrees with the notion that joining the military service must come with adequate monetary compensation. To be a soldier, he says, involves some personal sacrifice.
If the duty of going through National Service cannot be quantified in dollars and cents, are there intangible benefits to be reaped from it?
Recalling his time in National Service, Tan Ern Ser expresses his fondness for the camaraderie he shared with his fellow soldiers and the long-lasting friendship that still holds strong as the years wear on.
This sentiment is also shared by the other panellists: Javier Lim – a junior cook, and Leonard Lim – a supervisor at a moving company. Their initial apprehension about serving National Service quickly gave way to pride and honour as they realised the value of contributing to their nation.
Character building exercises and the ability to adapt to a different environment are some of the valuable life skills one can expect to learn through National Service. Tune in more to find out what our panellists have to say.
