What would you do to make life a little better for Singapore’s migrant workers?  Better pay?  Compulsory holidays? Better accommodation? In the final part of our discussion on migrant workers , the panelists give their closing thoughts on how the welfare and rights of migrant workers can be improved.
Former SDP member, Vincent Wijeysingha  wants to see  legislation with teeth and the rectification of labour rights in Singapore. He stresses that the four pieces of labour legislation; the Employment Act, the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, the Trade Union Act and the Industrial Acts should “act to mirror the standards of international labour organisation conventions law and then ensure that they are exercised and implemented”. He also maintains that it would be unfair to compare their conditions to that of poorer nations and instead go by the old adage of “doing unto others what you would have them do unto you”
Debbie Fordyce, co-ordinator for the NGO, Transient Workers Count Too, feels that salaries are  too low and the fees  migrant workers  pay to agents too high. She hopes that one day the fees that they pay to obtain their jobs in Singapore   will be eliminated and calls for tighter control on rogue agents and employers.
AKM Mohsin, who runs a Bengali publication in Singapore, wants migrant workers to be better educated on their rights and also for all workers to get a week off.
Jewel, a migrant worker, is satisfied with the rules and regulations in place but says that there should be  better enforcement particularly  when it comes to the rules pertaining to  safety on construction sites.
Tune in to this final  part of our debate on migrant workers to find out what our panelists have to say.
