Is Singapore overcrowded : What future do we want? (6/6)
With the governments plans to increase Singapore's population to 6.9 million by 2030 many people are worried that the city-state will become seriously overcrowded. Even current figures of 5.3 million makes Singapore more densely populated than Hong Kong.
With more and more people arriving the pressure on the infrastructure is beginning to take its toll. Skyrocketing housing prices, high cost of living, overcrowded shopping malls, long wait times for taxes and buses and jammed packed MRT trains. The list it seems is endless and as the list grows the more fed up it seems Singaporeans are becoming. But if Singapore is going to develop as a truly global city does it really have a choice? Should we see people as a major resource as we don't have any natural resources? It's a contentious subject that gets people quite hot under the collar. TalkAbout invited a good cross section of the community to air their views on the subject. The panel included a businessmen, an opposition leader, a former Tourism Board executive and a young actor and entertainer.
Watch this heated debate unfold. Will the rapid arrival of immigrants change the fabric of society? Is immigration forcing Singaporeans to emigrate or are they just relocating for better work opportunities? Does the continued arrival of more foreigners make Singaporeans feel like foreigners in their own country? Or are Singaporeans just perpetual grumblers? Watch the panelists spar over the number game. Why indeed 6.9 million?. Why not round it off to 7 million? Or is 6.9 million the maximum number of people Singapore can actually accommodate? After all, Singapore is a land-scarce country with limited resources. So tune in and judge for yourself if Singapore will be able to cope with the new population targets that have been set by the government. It's a debate not to be missed.
