There are more than twenty animal welfare groups in Singapore and all of them have the same mission – to put an end to animal cruelty.
In Part 4 of our discussion on Animal Welfare, meet some of the animals that have been saved from the jaws of death.  There’s adorable Bessie who was skin and bones and Katie who was rescued from a Tuas factory. They are just two of 50 dogs Save Our Street Dogs have under their care.
Five representatives from animal welfare groups joined the panel and spoke about their work and the challenges they face. The Animal Concerns Research & Education Society, known as ACRES, focuses primarily on wild animals and was founded in 2001. With the rapid development of Singapore many animals are losing their habitat. ACRES receives more than 300 calls from the public each month and rescues a variety of animals including bats, cobras, pangolins and star tortoises to name a few.  They rescue, rehabilitate, release or relocate and that means some of the exotic animals they rescue are repatriated back to their country of origin! In fact ACRES has about 90 animals waiting to go home!
But all this work requires money so how critical is fund raising ?  Action For Singapore Dogs is one of the oldest dog organizations and requires $40,000 each month. It relies heavily on public donations to fund its work. The Cat Welfare Society, which advocates a sterilization and feeding programme for stray cats, also relies  heavily on donations but  tries to be self-relient by raising funds through calendar sales and flea markets.
But not all the groups rescue animals. Agency For Animal Welfare Singapore is one of the newer animal organizations.  Its main focus is on pet owners and educating them on looking after their pets. They organize mediations for pet related disputes between neighbours in HDB flats.
