Animal cruelty is on the rise. In fact there has been an alarming rise in the number of cases in Singapore. According to AVA (Agri-Food andVeterinary Authority) cases rose by a fifth in 2012, up from 400 in 2011 to 484.
In April 2013 alone, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) reported 69 alleged cases of cruelty. Recent horrific cases include animals hung to death, kittens dismembered, dogs poisoned and cats beaten and tortured to death. In addition, the SPCA has seen an increase of up to 5 per cent in animal abuse incidents this year alone. It received 1,017 reports from July 2011 to June 2012.
So why are animal cruelty and abuse cases on the rise? Is it because we are becoming more aware of animal welfare and reporting more cases? Or is it because we have become more affluent and are buying more pets without fully understanding how to care for animals?
In this episode of Talkabout, we have a panel of experts from different animal organisations across Singapore : Cat Welfare Society, Animal Concern and Research Education Society (ACRES), Action for Singapore Dogs, Save our Street Dogs, Agency for Animal Welfare Singapore and a vet from Companion Animal Surgery. Find out more about the panellists by tuning in to the first part of our debate on animal welfare.
