Bukit Brown (Part 2) : The Controversy
Bukit Brown occupies a large area of land right in the middle of Singapore. Covering around 233 hectors it occupies a prime location, little wonder it’s ripe for development. But as conservationists argue it’s home to rare wildlife and should be preserved. The Nature Society of Singapore first registered the importance of the site in the 1990s. It has since been awarded a 4 star out of 5 star conservation site. There are many rare species of birds that are threatened in Singapore and they all can be found in Bukit Brown. Aboout 15 are in Singapore’s Red Data book of threatened species in and out of these 4 species are also on the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) Red Data list. Some of the rare birds include, Red-Crowned Barbet, Chestnut-Bellied Malkoha, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle, and the Straw-Headed Bulbul. It’s a twitchers paradise! But these are not migratory birds, they are indigenous tropical forest birds which is why Bukit Brown is an important kind of territory, extra foraging range for forest species.
The government originally had plans to build a road but following the public outcry, compromised on an 8 lane flyover . So how will the flyover affect the fauna and flora? Surely, it’s a lot less damaging than a road? The conservationists say the flyover will in fact go right through the most beautiful part of Bukit Brown and is very destructive in so many ways. But are they over reacting ? Tune and decide for yourself in this hotly discussed topic on Conservation V Development: The battle for Bukit Brown.
