Chinese New Year is indisputably China’s biggest holiday and has traditionally been regarded as the best time for family reunions. It’s a festival swathed in traditions and rituals -houses are cleaned, new clothes bought, and debts repaid. In fact, it is unlucky to sweep the floor on the first day as fortune may be swept away from the home. But some people lament that some of the traditions are being forgotten. Many of the younger generation know very little about the origins of Chinese New Year or know about the Kitchen God ritual,  Today’s hectic lifestyle means there’s no time to pass down folklore. With supermarkets stocking every conceivable Chinese goodie, there’s little incentive to learn the art of Chinese New Year baking such as Nian Gao(sticky rice) and Love Letters. But it’s not just about hectic lifestyles, some traditions conflict with religious beliefs and with the increasing trend of globalization, some people claim that Christmas has become more popular with children than Chinese New Year. Age too is an important factor. The elderly are more attached to Chinese traditions while the younger generation prefer K-pop. So how much of the Chinese New Year traditions have been eroded and how many are thriving and being revived. Well, we have some experts in the studio to impart their views and share with us some of their traditional Chinese rituals.
